Justice Justice for Workers

Special constables working as jailers at the police lock-up in Sydney earn significantly less wages than special constables elsewhere in Nova Scotia. Yet their job duties and responsibilities are similar, and they are required to have the exact

same training.

For example, they earn about 25 percent less than corrections officers in Sydney make, and about 35 percent less than a booking technician at the lock-up in Halifax. Unlike corrections officers, they have no medical staff or specially trained officers to back them up when people are entered into lock-up. Their job responsibilities have been increasing steadily over the past few years, and they are required to work excessive overtime because it is hard to retain staff when people can make more money up the road. A pay increase and job reclassification can fix this injustice. Tell Cape Breton Regional Municipality to pay these workers what they are worth.
