FENNELL, Judith Marie

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Judith Marie Fennell, on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at the age of 76. Judy died peacefully at Carewest Garrison Green, Calgary Alberta with family by her side. Born in Sydney on December 9, 1944, Judith was the daughter of the late Richard (Dick) and Aileen (O’callaghan) Fennell.

Judith is survived by her three children, Kirt Mcmaster of California, Aileen (Keith) Taylor of Alberta, Natalie Mcmaster of Nova Scotia; five grandchildren, Darren, Luke, Dean, Keegan and Norah; sister, Francis (Joe) Maclean; brother, Art (Margaret) Fennell; and father of her children, Sheldon Mcmaster. Also left to mourn are many nieces, nephews, and many friends. Judy is predeceased in death by her parents and her brothers, Davie (Linda) Fennell and Tom (Joy) Fennell.

As a child, Judy lived for a short time in the Pier, later moving to Royal Ave in Ashby. She especially loved skating, bowling, and spending time with family and friends. Judy loved her grandchildren unconditionally, spending special occasions savoring every moment of her time with them. Even in her last days, when her grandchildren walked into the room, her spirit lifted. She will forever have a special place in their hearts.

Judy came from a family of artists and was a talented artist herself. She was particularly gifted in painting, drawing and using her creative flair to make her own clothes. Judy loved animals and even bred German Shepherds. Through the years, she travelled extensively to Greece, Japan, Hawaii, Florida and Europe. No matter where she travelled, Judy always loved coming home to her Cape Breton roots.

Judy would never shy away from a challenge. She completed a diploma in Religious Education from Cape Breton University. She also completed courses in clinical pastoral education from the Institute of Pastoral Training. Judy was an active member at St. Mary’s Parish in East Bay, where she was very involved with the CWL and youth education programs. She worked in Palliative Care and volunteered many hours supporting grieving families at the old St. Rita’s hospital. With encouragement and support from Father Basil Campbell, Judy went back to school after her children grew up and in 1992, she graduated with her BA (honors) from CBU. She then moved to Halifax and in 1997, she completed her Masters in Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology. In Halifax, Judy worked at the IWK Children’s Hospital as the chaplain. The arrival of Judy’s grandchildren prompted a move to Calgary in 2001. While in Calgary, she worked in long term care, serving as the chaplain at the Mckenzie Towne Care Centre.

Judy always turned to her faith in God to give her strength. She was kind, determined and always there to provide support or to lend an ear. She lightened the world around her with her witty sense of humor and with her infectious laugh. She will be dearly missed.

The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Carewest Garrison Green in Calgary for all the wonderful care that Mom received. Visitation will take place at TW Curry in Sydney on Friday, August 6 at from 5 p.m to 8 p.m. The Funeral

Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Parish in East Bay. Memories and condolences can be left for the family by visiting twcurry.com.
