JESSICA SMITH CAPE BRETON POST jessica.smith@cbpost.com @Cbpost_jessica

WHEN: Friday, July 23.

BY WHO: Liberal leader Iain Rankin, accompanied by Victoria-the Lakes candidate Nadine Bernard.

THE PROMISE: As part of the Liberals’ tourism restart boost, the Tourism Digital Assistance Program would be extended with another $5 million in taxpayer funding if the Liberals are re-elected. The program has been put in place to aid local tourism businesses in increasing their online presence and adopting digital technologies.

THE COST: The program would be extended with an additional $5 million over two years if the Liberals are re-elected.

THE QUOTE: “(A) part of our economy that is foundational is how we adapt to the digital scene in our economy and what people call the fourth industrial revolution. Today we are supporting the tourism sector and how it relates to the digital economy ... This (Tourism Digital Assistance) program helps eligible tourism businesses increase their visibility by working with qualified digital consultants to enhance or develop effective digital marketing or e-commerce tools. Tourism is so key to Nova Scotia’s economy, especially in Cape Breton.”

FACT CHECK: Rankin said that 2019 estimated tourism revenues are $2.64 billion. Estimated tourism revenues for 2019 are $2.633 billion as per the province’s 2019 tourism indicators data.

Rankin said tourism revenues dropped to $900 million in 2020. The province’s website says that revenues will not surpass 900 million in a best-case forecast based on information from September 2020 (most recently available data).

THE REACTION: “It’s amazing. This province relies heavily on tourism and I think it’s really a great investment in the future and also for our children and grandchildren and that they will be able to find employment in the tourism industry.” — Marian Logan, a visitor to the Highland Village Museum who is from Cape Breton and was present at the announcement
