CBRM RECOGNIZES THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF LOCAL COAL MINERS

Cecil Snow, from left, of the Florence Legion, Eileen Romeo and her sister Evelyn Macdougall and Cape Breton Regional Municipality Deputy Mayor Earlene Macmullin, who represents District 2, pose at the miners’ monument in Florence on Friday. Romeo and Macdougall lost their father in 1947 in a mining accident in the community and have been organizing a memorial at this site over the past 22 years. Friday was Davis Day in memory of all those who lost their lives toiling in local coal mines. CBRM councillors fanned out to their districts to lay wreaths at monuments. This is the second year Davis Day commemorations have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
