DECOSTE, Ronald Glace Bay

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ronald ‘Ronnie’/ ‘Dad’/ 'Poppie' Decoste on May 3rd 2021 at 86 years of age at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay (New Aberdeen), he was the youngest son of the late Alexander Decoste of Arichat and Jane (Maceachern) of Antigonish. He was a member of St. John’s Church and later St. Anne’s Parish. Dad worked for Maritime Tel & Tel for over 30 years – a job that took him all over Cape Breton Island. He was very active in sports. In his younger years, he played baseball at the Black Diamond Field (New Aberdeen) where he also learned to skate. Dad was a great goal tender and he played for many competitive hockey teams. His passion for the game made us all love the sport. Dad also enjoyed bowling and was in a few leagues. In 1985, at the age of 50, Dad was injured on the job and became a paraplegic which was a devastating blow. We were told that he might never walk again but against all odds, he prevailed and walked with braces. He did well for another 30 years. He and Mom enjoyed travelling to Ontario to visit their two sons and daughter. Dad will be sadly missed by Teresa (Forbes), his loving wife, of 60 years; children, Kim (Charles) Macqueen, Michael (Paula), Forbes and Janet (the late Shawn) Brown, as well as his six grandchildren, Garett, Brent, Kyle, Meghan, Margo, Mckayla and his five great grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Besides his parents, Dad was predeceased by brothers, John Alex, Willie, Duncan and Danny; sisters, Catherine and Rita; as well as a son-inlaw, Shawn. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and/or The Glace Bay Food Bank. A special thank you to dad’s sister –in-law, Emeline Forbes, the staff at Glace Bay Hospital and Dr. Gordon Spencer for his many years of continued care.

‘Dad we love you and we will miss you.

Stand tall until we meet again.’ Cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life for Ron will be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family by visiting www.tjtracey.com
