(April 15, 1946 - November 15, 2023) Patrick Francis Hayward, a selfless man of faith, volunteerism, kindness and compassion a true man for others, passed away peacefully at the Health Science Center on November 15, 2023, at the age of 77. He was surrounded by his family, who will miss him dearly. Patrick was born on April 15, 1946, to Alphonsus and Mary Hayward. He grew up in St. John's, on Signal Hill, with his siblings Bren, Jerome, and Donna. Patrick attended St. Joseph’s School as well as St. Patrick’s Hall Schools graduating from Brother Rice in 1963. He married Helen Trahey in 1981 and they had one son, Ryan in 1986. Patrick dedicated much of his time to serving his community and helping others. He was a long-time member of Scouts Canada, where he served as the Provincial Commissioner for Newfoundland amongst other positions. He was also a Fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, where he held two terms as Grand Knight with Terra Nova Council. He spent over 40 years running charitable booths at the Royal St. John's Regatta, a tradition he loved and cherished. In 2002 he received the Queens Jubilee medal for outstanding volunteerism and then in 2016 he was inducted into the Junior Achievement Volunteer Hall of Fame for his many years of devoted charitable works. In Patrick professional life he worked for nearly 40 years with HH Marshalls and The News Group, where he made many friends and colleagues. After retiring from his first career, he joined The Down Home in early 2000s where he worked for another decade. Patrick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his wife Helen and son Ryan who he often called his “Number One Son” or just “Number One”. A supportive and proud father he always encouraged Ryan to pursue his dreams. He was also a fun-loving and generous uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews. Patrick was predeceased by his parents, his brother Jerome, his nephews Keith and Jerry Jr., his special aunt Mary Hayward and his sister-in-law Marge Hiscock. He is survived by his wife Helen, his son Ryan (Angela), his brother Bren, his sister Donna (Tony), his Niece Kim (Kevin) and his sister-in-law Gladys (Terry). Cremation has taken place and Patrick will be waking at Caul’s Funeral Home Lemarchant Road on Wednesday November 22nd, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday November 23rd, 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Patrick's life will be celebrated with a funeral Mass at The Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on November 24th, at 11 a.m., The funeral Mass will be livestreamed at: www.thebasilica.net/live/ followed by interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery. A reception to follow at 1 p.m. at The Knights of Columbus St Clare Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bonaventure’s College.
