First storm of 2022 wallops Annapolis Valley

Tens of thousands of Nova Scotia homes and businesses were left without power Jan. 8 after the first winter storm of 2022 blasted the province. The nor’easter began Jan. 7, depositing upwards of 45 centimetres of snow on parts of the province throughout the day and overnight.

About 116,000 Nova Scotia Power customers lost their electricity during the storm, spokesman Matt Drover said Jan. 8.

As of 10:16 a.m. on Jan. 9, there were 241 active outages affecting 5,469 customers. By 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 10, there were 38 active outages impacting 1,881 customers.

The utility said road conditions slowed some of its crews in areas such as the Annapolis Valley and Amherst and noted Bridgetown, Kingston and Coldbrook were particularly hard hit by significant amounts of heavy snow combined with high winds.
