SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – A BordenCarleton, P.E.I., business and its owner have been fined for failing to comply with the Public Health Act.
Chad Ceretti, of Borden-Carleton, and Ceretti's Grocery & Hardware Ltd. have both pleaded guilty to one summary offence charge each under Section 39 of the act, which is the section that covers orders by the chief public health officer involving communicable diseases.
The charges are related to noncompliance with masking mandates that were introduced in an effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
The charge against Ceretti himself is from Nov. 26, 2021, while the charge against the business is from Jan. 24, 2022.
John Diamond, director of prosecution for the Department of Justice and Public Safety, said there were multiple attempts by provincial officials to get the business to comply with masking mandates, but they were unsuccessful.
“There were complaints, public health and conservation went for a visit and noted the staff weren't wearing their masks.
There was some discussion, but unfortunately, that wasn't rectified,” said Diamond.
Subsequent followup visits also found a lack of masking by employees.
Ceretti was fined $1,000 and must pay a $50 fee, while the business is on the hook for a $5,000 fine and a $50 fee.
A third charge against the business on the same matter was dropped. If it had proceeded, the fine against it would have been doubled to $10,000.
