Welcome sign to be more welcoming

A large overhead sign on Forest Street near the Visitor Information Centre is being refinished to become even more welcoming.

Mi’kmaq and French greetings will soon be added to the Welcome to Yarmouth sign.

During a Yarmouth town council meeting in November, Mayor Pam Mood said she understands that the sign, which has greeted tourists arriving via ferries from Maine for decades, is in “pretty hard shape.”

The sign was to be assessed for structural integrity before being refinished.

A short discussion was held with regard to another Welcome to Yarmouth sign on Highway 1 that used to hang by the Lake Milo boat club, designating the town line.

Coun. Belle Hatfield suggested that town council may not want to pursue replacing the sign, as municipal units in the county may soon be holding meetings to discuss the issue of consolidation.
