GLACE BAY — A rally is planned for Tuesday in support of employees laid off from the Donkin coal mine. The rally comes following the most recent round of layoffs, in which mine owner Kameron Coal sent its remaining employees off the job. It also follows updates this week from the provincial Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration and a consultant who conducted a review of the mine’s safety. Those updates, announced on Wednesday, said further steps need to be completed before the mine could be reopened — but has also generated further uncertainty among miners and stakeholders about the future of the mine. The mine has been under a stop-work order since midJuly following a pair of partial roof collapses in one of the mine’s tunnels. The rally is scheduled to take place at noon at the Glace Bay Miners Museum.
