Famed colliery sealed for good Lionel A. Forsyth, president of Dominion and Coal Corporation, announced the famed Allan Shaft in Stellarton would be sealed off for good. The famed coalpit, the bankhead of which is pictured above, had been burning in two sections, in one location since early March. Forsyth said the mine was a ‘hazardous operation’ for years. It was expected Cape Breton mines would absorb most of the displaced Stellarton workers. Originally published on July 6, 1951.
