Lennox Island moderate livelihood fishery:

• In 1999, the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed the Mi’kmaq have a treaty right to fish for a moderate livelihood in their traditional territory of Mi’kma’ki (the Maritimes).

• The federal government has never defined moderate livelihood.

• After years of stalled negotiations, Lennox Island announced in April it would launch a moderate livelihood fishery without DFO authorization.

• Junior Gould, chief of Abegweit First Nation, the Island’s other First Nations band, says it is waiting for community consensus before launching its own treaty fishery.
