AN EXCEPTIONAL VOLUNTEER

Bradley Ryckman was one of 23 Canadians to receive a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from Gov. Gen. Mary Simon at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on April 21. It is the highest honour for volunteer service an individual can receive within the Canadian Honours System. Ryckman, a Greenwood resident, has been a dedicated volunteer within his community for 25 years. He has served as president of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association 107 Wing, where his efforts in co-ordinating annual Remembrance Day ceremonies for retirement homes allow residents to pay their respects safely. He is also a founding member of the 14 Wing Pipes and Drums band and has contributed nine years as a volunteer snare drummer. The other Nova Scotians to receive the recognition were Jack Marshall of Sheet Harbour and Halifax’s Jennie MacKenzie.
