Axewomen book playoff ticket

Axemen earn tie with Cape Breton Capers

The Acadia Axewomen have clinched a spot in the Atlantic University Sport women’s soccer playoffs.

The Axewomen went 1-1 during a tough road trip to Antigonish and Sydney.

Acadia blanked the St.

F.X. X-Women 2-0 on Oct. 16 and lost 2-1 to the Cape Breton Capers on Oct. 17. Acadia improved to 6-2-2 and began this week tied with the Capers (6-0-2) for top spot in the 10-team conference. The Capers have two games in hand. The XWomen are 5-4-0.

Madicynn Harnish scored both goals at St. F.X. with Milena Ramirez stopping five shots to record the clean sheet.

Meghan Johnston gave the Axewomen a 1-0 lead 35 minutes into the game with the Capers. The home side tied it in the 53rd minute on a goal by Rebecca Lambke off a penalty kick and Abby Macneil scored the winner in the 85th minute.

Ramirez stopped six shots in the loss.

On the men’s side, Acadia lost 1-0 at St. F.X. before earning a 1-1 tie with the Capers.

Cameron Shaw scored in the 70th minute for the lone goal in the X-Men’s win. Seamus MacDonald made two saves for the win while Michael O’Flynn stopped five shots in the loss.

Joe Iatrou gave Acadia a 1-0 lead late in the first half at Cape Breton while Kairo Coore tied it in the 63rd minute.

Andrew Nutt stopped four shots for the Axemen while Daniel Clarke stopped one of the two shots he faced in the first half. Jordan Watkins played the second half and wasn't credited with facing a shot.

St. F.X. (7-2-0) began the week atop the men’s standings while Cape Breton is 4-1-3 and Acadia is 1-8-1.

UPCOMING WEEK

Acadia hosts the Memorial Sea-Hawks Oct. 24 with the women playing at noon and the men at 2:15 p.m. Acadia’s teams wrapped up the regular season by hosting the UPEI Panthers Oct. 29.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Capers will host both the men’s and women’s soccer championships Nov. 4-7. The top six teams qualify for each event.
