Axemen finish second

The Acadia Axemen struck early, but couldn’t hold on as the UNB Reds won the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association final 7-6 Oct. 17 in Charlottetown.

The Axemen led 3-1 after the first inning and 4-1 heading to the third. The Reds scored three in the bottom of the third inning to tie it. Acadia regained the lead with one in the top of the fourth before UNB scored three more runs in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.

Acadia pulled within one in the top of the seventh, but could not plate the equalizer.

The victory completed a

4-0 weekend for the Reds, who repeated as league champs, while Acadia split its four games with both losses coming to UNB.

Rylan Matchett earned the win, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four.

Keegan Gaskell took the loss, giving up seven runs (including two unearned) on eight hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two. Seth Routledge recorded the final out.

Jackson Colbourne, Jake MacKinnon and Kieran Finn each had two hits for Acadia. Finn drove in three runs while Doug Hassell, Jacobie Ford and Jake MacKinnon picking up the other RBI. MacKinnon and Garrett Culleton each scored twice.

UNB went 3-0 in the round robin followed by Acadia (21), Holland College (1-2) and St. F.X. (0-3). Here’s a short recap of the Axemen’s roundrobin games.

UNB quickly erased a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the first and then scored six in the second to take a commanding lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

UNB went on to win the opening game of the tournament 12-1 in five innings on

Oct. 15.

Ryan Nason earned the win while Routledge was tagged with the loss.

Hassell and Finn had the Axemen’s two hits.

ACADIA15 ST. F.X. 5

The Axemen earned their first win of the four-team tournament with a 15-5 victory in six innings over the

St. F.X. X-Men on Oct. 16.

Acadia led 4-1 after the second inning and 6-1 through three before ending the game with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Ford earned the win, giving up five runs, including one unearned, in six innings.

Colbourne, MacKinnon, Scott Long and Aaron Stacey each had two hits for the Axemen. Cam Lynds, MacKinnon, Long and Routledge each drove in a pair of runs.

Acadia improved to 2-1 by defeating the host Holland College Hurricanes 7-2 in the final game of the round robin.

The Axemen got going early with three runs in the first and four more in the second.

MacKinnon picked up the win. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks in seven innings. He struck out four.

Ben MacDougall took the loss.

Culleton picked up two hits and scored twice for the Axemen while MacKinnon went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
